Innovation in Education
Taking an innovative approach to helping students who struggle with the learning disability of Dyslexia, CHS is offering American Sign Language as a foreign language credit. Dyslexia manifests itself primarily as a difficulty with written language, particularly reading and spelling. With the recommended diploma requiring two years of foreign language, a subject that taps in to a dyslexic child’s disability, the Texas Education Agency has approved ASL as a foreign language credit. In the course, which is offered online, students watch videos that demonstrate the various words and phrases, practice with each other in small groups and gain assistance from a certified aid with sign experience. The district’s goal with the program is to provide a successful alternative to those who may struggle with the traditional foreign languages offered.
